How To Choose A Quality Yoga Mat

How to choose  a quality yoga mat and how do you choose amongst the many competitors?

First, You don’t want a mat that’s going to fall apart in a few months. Some mats literally only last for a few weeks or months. One way to evaluate this issue is to do some research. Talk to your friends about mats that have and haven’t worked for them, and check at online stores that encourage customers to write reviews of the products.

Another issue to consider is durability.  A yoga mat has two basic purposes. It needs to keep you from slipping and sliding while you go through your asanas (postures). And, if you are very thin and/or do hard, fast workout programs like Ashtanga Yoga, the mat needs to provide padding between you and the floor. Therefore a quality yoga mat for people practicing Ashtanga needs to be about four millimeters thick.

But what makes a quality yoga mat for those of us who practice the kinder, gentler, Hatha Yoga? For some people, the answer lies in environmental friendliness. According to Laura Cornell of the Green Yoga Association, most Yoga sticky mats contain a product called polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which is linked to some types of cancer and cannot be recycled. Quality Yoga mats that do not use PVC include the eco-Yoga mat and the Earth Elements mat.

If you’re new to yoga or you’ve been at it for many years, you either need a mat right now, or you’ll need a new one some time in the future. Maybe you started out with one of those colorful cheap mats, but found out it stunk to high heaven of chemicals? Or maybe you went the earth-friendly way and got a yoga mat made from jute. It didn’t smell bad, but then it didn’t last more than two months either. What’s a yoga practitioner to do?

Rubber Yoga Mats

This is the best type for the environmentally-conscious money saver. They are sturdy yet inexpensive. Rubber is a replaceable resource, but be sure your mat isn’t made of synthetic rubber. This is made from an environmentally unfriendly process, and is liable to have the same health detriments, although not as bad as the phthalate mats. Natural rubber mats could be a problem for you if you’re allergic to latex, but they do make phthalate-free and latex-free mats for a bit more in cost. They are well-worth it rather than exercise on harmful chemicals or the rubber/latex that causes your allergies to flare up.

Pilates Mats

Can you use Pilates mats for yoga? Sure, but watch for a few things: First of all, a Pilates mat is much thicker than a typical yoga mats because you spend more time on the floor doing Pilates than doing yoga. It’s beneficial in saving knees, hips, elbows, shoulders, and spine from contact injuries. You may want to consider it to cushion an old injury to prevent further damage. Second, Pilates mats aren’t necessarily made with non-slip surfaces. You need this for yoga, so be sure it has this feature. If you do both yoga and Pilates and want to use just one mat for both, definitely use a Pilates mat. Using a mat meant for yoga when doing Pilates could cause injuries.

Standard Plastic Yoga Mats

This is a common first-timer mistake, but it’s the cheapest type of mat and therefore expected of the newbies. But it IS a mistake if you intend to keep doing yoga. If you’re not sure, this type of mat may just turn you away from yoga altogether! First of all, it’s very thin and doesn’t provide much in the way of cushioning. Additionally it really smells of chemicals, and these chemicals are not conducive to good health! These types of yoga mats are made from Phthalates. This chemical turns hard plastic soft and causes lung and kidney damage in rats. Don’t leave this type of mat in your car, either. It will release this harmful chemical when it gets hot. And if you’re concerned about the environment, these aren’t for you, either. They are made using and environmentally dangerous process.

Cork or Jute Yoga Mats

Cork and jute yoga mats are environmentally friendly, but they have drawbacks of their own. They are made from porous plants, and therefore absorb your sweat when you practice your yoga. This results in a matching smell to your well-exercised but un-showered body, and a weakening of the structure over time. Now, it won’t fall apart like that “other brand” of paper towel on the commercial, but don’t expect it to last very long if you practice yoga with any regularity.

When you thumb through a yoga mats catalog, you will be surprised to find out there are so many different kinds of mats. Rubbery yoga sticky mats, light weight travel mats, alignment mats, natural yoga mats and cotton rugs. Most yoga mats are made from Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) - an oil-based plastic.

Yoga props are important for safety, stability and support while attempting the correct posture during yoga practice, which is why we recommend you browse our extensive collection of yoga equipment & Yoga props.

I began practicing yoga in the late 60s. My first teachers were older men and women who were considered eccentric senior citizen types—in other words, they were pioneers ahead of their time.

When someone comes to my yoga class with pain and stiffness in their body, one of the first things I generally teach them is how to practice yoga’s vital weight-bearing standing poses safely with the support of props such as a yoga mat and chair.

Runners approach yoga with everything from trepidation to fear, boredom and skepticism. It is rare to find a runner excited to try the first yoga class. Many runners are convinced that a workout centered on a mat can top a run.

Shannon Struze, a yoga instructor at the YMCA in Fayetteville and downtown, had some advice. Runners are an achy bunch, and we’re always talking about injuries, treatments and prevention. If you have still not signed on to the benefits of yoga as a runner but not a yoga mat, here are some reminders as to why you should jump on the wagon.

The yoga strap

Straps or belts are also useful in yoga stretching techniques. The most popular motion that involves the strap is the supta padangusthasana, otherwise known as a reclined stretch of the leg.

The strap is used in postures that reach around the foot or the back. By pulling on the strap, the pulling pressure works the targeted muscles with a lesser degree of difficulty. The straps are not used that often but are great ways to prevent injuries and ease into stretching poses. Straps or belts range from $6.95 - $12 at yoga stores around Boulder.

“I’ve never really used the block or strap before but it could help so I don’t have to stretch my legs all the way,” said Alicia Hetzel, a junior MCD biology major.

The yoga blanket

In order to enjoy yoga a bit more try bringing a blanket, some water and comfortable clothing. A blanket is source for warmth for the savasana (corpse pose) or when lying flat in mediation. A small blanket can also be used as a seat cushion when the pose requires sitting and meditating.

“I love the butterfly feeling I get from doing yoga, no matter where you are and what you have it can be fun,” said Jade Jauquet, a sophomore film studies major.

Yoga requires little equipment, and can be practiced anywhere at anytime.

The yoga mat

A great place to purchase a mat is on campus. Yoga mats are available for $17 at the CU Rec Center, which is cheap compared to high-end retail stores that typically charge $20 or more. Most yoga mats come in a rainbow spectrum of colors and are durable and lightweight.

The mat provides a surface to stretch on and complete yoga postures. After exercising, the mats roll up nice and neat to take it on the go.

“I take yoga two times a week at the rec center. They have everything I need. Yoga felt really good at first because I can’t stop moving now,” said Kirsten Wu, a sophomore biology major.
The yoga block

The wood or foam block is a tool that aids in stretching postures in yoga. Once in a posture, the block acts as a stabilization tool for those who might not be able to reach the ground. Yoga blocks can be purchased at most yoga stores for $8.95 - $23 each, depending on the material. Not everybody needs a block, but if postures and stretches seem a little out of the reach, think about bringing a block to class. It will ease the muscles into a pose rather than stretch them out.

“Those things [blocks and straps] allow those who are less flexible to do the moves to a full extent without putting stress on their body. I particularly don’t use them but I see other people borrowing them for class,” Wu said.
