How To Stitch a Row of Half Stitches

This diagram assists beginners with stitching a row of half stitches. Half stitches are often used in the background for large designs. A row of half stitches is the basis for a row of cross stitches.

1. This diagram represents four squares of Aida fabric.
   Begin the row of half stitches by bringing the threaded needle up at 1. Carry the floss across the square and bring the needle down at 2.
2. Bring the needle back up at 3. Secure the end of the floss on the back of the fabric.
3. Complete the second half stitch by taking the needle back down at 4.
4. Begin the third half stitch by inserting the needle at 5.
5. Complete the third half stitch by taking the needle down at 6.
6. The final half stitch begins at 7 and ends when the floss is drawn down through the fabric at 8.
7. Secure the floss on the back of the fabric and the row of half stitches is complete.
